One is to hire more nurses and the other one is to hire more counselors in order to help with the development of students. There is not enough money to accomplish the two proposals. Which one should Mayor Mike Bloomberg choose?

A) The first proposal is to hire more nurses.

Having more nurses in school is very important because they:
1- Can help with the health of students.
2- Can give sex education classes.
3- Be able to help all the students if there is more than one nurse.

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/125/125781_schools_need_fulltime_nurses.html
http://www.eagletribune.com/news/stories/19990413/LN_002.htm

B) The second is to hire more counselors.

It is necessary that schools have more psychological, academic, and career counselors because if we have more they could:

1- Help student when they have personal problems (family, self esteem, etc).
2- Give academics advisement.
3- Have time for each student.

http://www.nysut.org/newyorkteacher/2000-2001/010117counselors.html http://stats.bls.gov/oco/ocos067.htm
(Read nature of Work)
http://www.lemoyne.edu/otrp/otrpresources/helping/helping-counselor-school.html (Read typical job duties)
http://oz.plymouth.edu/~ggoodno/CounselorasEducator.htm
(Do not print is 47 pages is great for people who want to be counselors.)

Magdeline Infante
Jennifer Castano

Choosing the right decision

Last week we voted to go to the Museum of Sex but nobody went even the one who proposed it including myself. This is an example of what happens in our society. Many people vote for something but they really don’t know all about what they are voting for. Another reason is that sometimes people think it’s a good idea to vote in favor of what is convenient for them. The consequence of this is that not always what you think, like or want is the great decision for everybody. That’s why we should think before voting and see if this brings benefits, not only for us, but also for the society.

A learning visit

Yesterday April 18 Slanking, Natalia, Vilma, Martina and I went to the Status of Liberty but all the tickets were sold out. We decided to go to the South Street Seaport Museum in which you can see different types of ship. Fist we visit a pilot house from a 1923 tugboat. Then we went to Ambrose lightship which was built in 1908 to guide ships safely from the Atlantic Ocean into the broad mouth of Lower New York Bay. After that we visit Pioneer a ship which was originally built in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania in 1885 to carry sand mined near the mouth of the Delaware Bay to an iron foundry in Chester, Pennsylvania. The next one was Peking which was launched in Hamburg, Germany in 1911; it was used to carry manufactured goods to South America and to return via Cape Horn with nitrate. The last one that we visit was Wavertree which was built at Southhampton, England in 1885 for R.W. Leyland & Company of Liverpool, one of the last large sailing ships built of wrought iron. Today, she is the largest afloat.
We learned a lot about these boats and we also had a great time. I think it is very important to visit places that we don’t know so we can learn more. If you want to visit this place you just have call 212-748-8590 and get information that you want to know about the place or go to their web page www.southstreetseaportmuseum.org.

“A day without a Mexican”

This is mock documentary movie which talks about immigrants and all the work that they do. It takes place in California because most of Mexican lives there. I think this movie is very interesting because it shows the live of many immigrants and it also shows us all the work that immigrants do. These people work in farms, supermarkets and housekeeping. The good part of the movie is when all the Mexican people disappear and everything was going crazy. United States citizens realize how important are immigrant because they do the work that they don’t do. For example, we eat vegetables but without farmers and most of farmers are immigrants because they pay them less that a citizen would want. That’s why people from the US should appreciate immigrants because they do the job that is necessary for them and they don’t do.

“A day without an immigrant it’s not a day”

Illegal Immigration

When I think about illegal immigration I feel very confused because in some way I am an immigrant too. I was born in the United States because my parents emigrated here from the Dominican Republic when they were very young. They have all their papers but that doesn’t mean that I don’t think about other people. This is very sad because the cause of illegal immigration is because of the need of jobs to survive in life. Many people travel to the US to get a better life but when they can’t do it in the right way they get so frustrated that they do whatever to get there. For example, many Mexicans have this problem. It is very difficult for them to get here so they decide to enter by crossing the frontier. There are lot deaths when they try to do this. Another important thing is that if they get here don’t have the possibility to find a good job because they don’t have papers and they are also discriminated against them. I think the government should make new rules in which immigrants could have the opportunity to enter here without any problem. I also think if the United States gets benefit from other countries why can’t these countries get something from them???????

A US citizen false passport

Many people have problems when they come to the US. There are many things that you have to deal with and it depends in what is your case. Some people have issues in getting visa, their green cards, passport, etc. For me the most one of the most uncomfortable moment is when you know that your papers are good but they insist that something is wrong. For example, I was born in the US but I grew up in the D.R. and now I moved back. When I was in the airport in my country they send me to immigration because they though my passport was false. I was so mad and I said “Hey I was born in NY”. I showed them my birth certification and they said “oh … we are so sorry” and then they let me pass. There are always different issues on government agencies but some of them have better organization. I think the US government is more polite and more organized than the D.R.

A learnig and meeting visit

Yesterday my classmates and I went to BMCC in Manhattan and met with Rivka’s students. I felt very good because they were very friendly and I also got to met people from other countries. We had brunch together and we got to know each other. After that we went to the Metropolitan Museum which is the most famous in The United States. The teachers Audrey and Rivka gave us an assignment in which we had to visit two exhibits. These were Photographs exhibits and Modern Art exhibits.
I choose “The open door” by William Henry. I think it was interesting because it made me remember some places of my country (the Dominican Republic) and also the artist interpretation of loneness. The other one was “A Young Mother Gazing at her Child” by William Adolphe Bouguereaur. Here you can see the love that a mother has for her child.
I think it is very important got to museums and get to know new people. I really enjoyed it and I hope we can do it again.

Hi my name is Magdeline and I am in the CLIP program in BCC.
